I think part of the issue is APUs weren't popular so there isn't much added to the kernel for them. Which kernel is it you'r using? The other thing that is unknown is if the distro you used has added anything.

all I know is that the kernel is outdated like you've told me before. how do I check?

and yeah I suppose so. what could be added by the distro that would mess up sound though?

If you run uname -a in Terminal it will show the kernel config lines. If the builder added their name we can work out which version it is.

Run this in Terminal to show any non Apple kexts that are loaded,
